Khutbah 03/05/2010 - Death of Prophet Mohammad

Khutbah 77- Prophet Mohammad’s Death

Praise be to Allah

the one who made the life of our prophet

an example for us to follow and learn from

Allah says:

Muhammad (peace be upon him)

is no more than a Messenger,

indeed many Messengers have passed away before him.

If he dies or is killed,

will you then turn back on your heels?

And he who turns back on his heels,

not the least harm will he do to Allah;

and Allah will give reward to those who are grateful

We testify that there is no God to be worshiped except Allah

The one who wrote in the Quran

And ask not any other god along with Allah:

none has the right to be worshipped but He.

Everything will perish save His Face.

His is the Decision,

and to Him you all shall be returned

The one who called upon his prophet Mohammad (PBUH) by saying:

Truly, you will die and they too will die.

Then, on the Day of Resurrection,

you will all be disputing before your Lord.

We testify that prophet Mohammad (PBUH)

is the messenger and servant of Allah.

He was the greatest example for us

He delivered Islam to us exactly as ordered by Allah

and left us with guidance for how to live as Muslims.

and orders to ask our Muslim scholars when in doubt.

As confirmed by the verses revealed during the Farewell Hajj حجه الوداع     Which made Abu Bakr cry… Allah says:

Today I have perfected your religion for you

and completed my favor upon you

and accepted Islam as the best religion for you.

This day, those who disbelieved

have given up all hope of your religion;

so fear them not, but fear Me.

Nine days after Rasool Allah returned back to Madina

the last verses ايات of the Quran were revealed to him

Allah says

And be afraid of the Day

when you shall be brought back to Allah.

Then every person shall be paid what he earned,

and they shall not be dealt with unjustly.

When the prophet started to feel the pain

he asked to be taken to visit Martyrs of Uhud شهداء احد

I hope each one of us would keep this Sunnah سنه

and start visiting the graves to remember the Last Day

without being forced to go only when following a جنازه

Rasool Allah stood by the graves of martyrs of احد and said:

you are the fore runners, and we are the followers

and we are going to be together

Then in his way back the prophet (PBUH) cried

and he was asked: O’ Prophet why are you crying?

He answered: Because I am missing my brothers.

He was asked: Aren’t we your brothers?

He answered:

       No. You are my companions.

My brothers are people who come after you,

they believe me without seeing me.

each one of them is by 50.

The companions asked the prophet (PBUH):

50 of us or 50 of them?

The prophet (PBUH) replied:

Each one of them is by 50 of you.

The prophet (PBUH) became ill while he was in the house of ام المؤمنين ميمونه بنت الحارث      his wife Maymouna.

Three days before his death, the prophet (PBUH)

gathered his wives and he asked their permission

to allow him to stay at the house of

So let us learn from Rasool Allah and consult and respect our wives and protect their rights.

He was carried to Aisha’s house by

When the people saw the prophet (PBUH) in his sickness

they started to panic and gathered by Aisha’s house.

Then the prophet started to sweat a lot and as in the Hadeeth ام المؤمنين عائشه said:

The prophet (PBUH) was sweating, and I was wiping his sweat, by using the prophet’s own hands.

Because the blessed hands of the Prophet are better.

The experience of death is very hard.

Some people brought him water from different wells

hoping that one of them may cure the Prophet.

The Prophet heard people in his Masjid talking loudly.

He was told: the people are worried about you.

Rasool Allah tried to stand

but could not because of sickness.

He asked to be carried to them

He asked the people to take care of the prayer

and to keep doing it

and kept repeating the importance of the prayer.
Dear brothers and sisters:

Do not forget this advice from the prophet (PBUH)

Prayer is the first thing you will be asked about in your grave.

If it is good, then the rest of your work will be good.

And if it is bad, then the rest of your work will be bad.

Then The Prophet said to everyone in his Masjid:

O’ people! A servant of Allah is given to choice

between this Life or to be with Allah

and he choose to be with Allah

None of the people understood the meaning of these words

O’ prophet may Allah keep you well

The people looked at

how could he interrupt the prophet (PBUH)

But Rasool Allah told them:

Let Abu Bakr be.

Abu Bakr has a great place in my heart

and Allah will reward him

for all the help that he gave me

Then the prophet (PBUH) was carried back

to the house of

In Aisha’s room عبدالرحمن بن ابي بكرcame to visit him

and he was holding سواك in his hand,

The prophet (PBUH) looked at the سواك

ام المؤمنين عائشهunderstood that he wanted to use the سواك We hope that every wife can understand her husband by his signs or his eyes, and make her house a pleasure and safe haven for him. So Aisha asked it from her brother

she put the سواك   in her mouth first to soften it

then put it in the mouth of the prophet (PBUH)

the last thing that entered

the body of the prophet (PBUH)

was what I have used to soften the سواك with.
Then the prophet’s daughter فاطمه came to visit him walking like him. When the prophet (PBUH) saw فاطمة  he asked her to come close to him. We know that Fatimah and her mother Khadijah are of the four most noble women in Paradise

The Prophet whispered into her ear and she started to cry.

He whispered into her ear again and she smiled

When فاطمه was asked about this occasion

She said:

When my father whispered in my ear the first time

he told me that he was going to die so I cried.

Then he told me

that I would be the first one of his family to follow him,

meaning the first to die after him. Then I smiled.

The prophet (PBUH) died

with his head on the lap of his wife Aisha

and he was later buried in the same room where he died

which is located in the house of Aisha

and the grave is still there in the المدينه

as part of المسجد النبوي

When the prophet (PBUH) died,

all the companions and everyone in Madina were in shock.

Omar was so overcome with emotion

that he drew out his sword and declared,

"If anyone says that the Messenger of Allah is dead.

I will cut off his head!"

The Wisdom of Abu Bakr

All of Madina were in this state when Abu Bakr entered the mosque. He had found Prophet Mohammad better in the morning, So he had gone outside of Madinaearlier, but came back on hearing the sad news.

He entered the house of Aisha where Rasool Allah died

He uncovered his blessed face

and kissed him and cried

tears that were a must

at losing his prophet

his best friend

and his guiding light

then he spoke to Rasool Allah:

Oh you are better than my own father and mother!

Allah would never test you with two deaths

as for the death that was written for you

       you have died in it.

Then he walked out into the Masjid

to find the people in their shock

He found Omar saying that

Rasool Allah went to meet Allah

       Just like Musa did.

       And he will return.

People had gathered around Omar

Wishing what he was saying was real.

Abu Bakr ordered him :

       Sit down Omar.

Abu Bakr took his stand

and called out to the people.

All eyes turned towards him.

Then Abu Bakr began his most important address:

"O people!

If anyone among you worshipped Muhammad,

let him know that Muhammad is dead.

But those who worship Allah,

let them know that He lives

and will never die.

Then he read the words of the Qur'an.

`Muhammad is only a Messenger of Allah

There have been Messengers before him.

       What then,

will you turn back from Islam,

if he dies or is killed?"

These words of Abu Bakr changed everything.

Everyone later said that it was as if they had never heard those verses in their entire lives, until Abu Bakr read them.

In no time the confusion was gone.

The words of the Qur'an swept of all doubts from people's minds and they became ready to face facts.

It is in moments like this

That we fully understand the greatness of Abu Bakr

The only man to not waver

Or lose his vision

On the day that Rasool Allah died

His wisdom and actions saved all Muslims in Madina

From the Fitnah and trials that could have stormed the city and destroyed Muslims because of Rasool Allah’s death.

So may Allah bless Aisha the Mother of the Believers ام المؤمنين عائشه  and and her father Abu Bakr ابوبكر رضي الله عنه  for what they did to support the prophet (PBUH)

As for us,

we should follow the path of the prophet (PBUH)

to be from his brothers that he told his companions about

and to be with him and enjoy his company in Paradise

and we should say:

Oh Allah shower you blessings and mercy on

Prophet Mohammadand his family

As you showered you blessings and mercy

On Prophet Ibrahim and his family.

O’ Allah make us on the correct way of Islam

and the way of our prophet Mohammad (PBUH)

and fill our hearts with love for Prophet Mohammad.

O’ Allah give us the ability to do all the good deeds

O’ Allah unite the Muslims and return them to their high status

O’ Allah guide our Muslim youth and make them a great nation,

like you made the Companions the best of all nations.

O’ Allah make us do prayer الصلاة on time
and accept our prayer, supplication ( دعاء ) and charity ( صدقة)

O’ Allah forgive our sins, and the sins of our parents

and the sins of all the Muslims, who are living or dead

O’ Allah make us a mercy for our relatives and our families.

O’ Allah protect us and our families and all Muslims from evil.

O’ Allah be pleased with us,
and grant us your full forgiveness,
and a home in your highest paradise,
and permission to look upon your most beautiful face.
