Khutbah 02/12/2010 - Loving Prophet Mohammad
Praise be to Allah who sent Mohammad as mercy to mankind
And orders us to obey him in the Quran,
And take whatsoever the Messenger gives you, and deny yourselves that which he withholds from you, And fear Allah; for Allah is Severe in punishment.
One of the most important aspects of belief is following the path of the Prophet Mohammad without disputing and questioning. Following the Prophet is what elevated the companions in life and the here-after.
Allah also says in the Quran,
And the earliest of those to embrace Islam of Muhajirun (those who migrated from Makkah to Al-Madinah) and the Ansar (citizens of Al-Madinah who helped and aided Muhajirun) and also those who followed them exactly (in Faith). Allah is well-pleased with them as they are well-pleased with Him. He has prepared for them Gardens under which rivers flow (Paradise), to live therein forever. That is the greatest success.
Loving Prophet Mohammad and obeying him can best be seen through the actions of his companions. Such as when a man came to the people of Qebaa, telling them while they were in their prayer, that this very night Allah revealed verses to his Prophet, ordering him to change the direction of Prayer (Qiblah) to face Makkah instead of Jerusalem. When they heard this, they all turned to face the Ka’bah while still in the middle of their prayer. Their Masjid is still known today as the Masjid of two Qiblas.
In another example we see Anas Ibn Malik serving wine to people at the house of Talha.
A man entered saying, Have you not heard that wine had just been forbidden by revelation?
Anas says, then Talha stood and called into the people to abandon their wine and cast it away immediately.
Simply because a man came with the news from the Prophet All the streets of Madina became like running rivers of wine. This is the true love Allah and his Prophet
When a revelation was sent down forbidding men to wear gold, the Prophet took off his gold ring immediately and threw it down on the ground. So all the companions also took their gold rings off and threw it down following the way of the Prophet because they knew that paradise will not be attained, except by following the Prophet’s path.
And in the day of Khaybar when people were starving, waiting for their cooking food of donkey meat to be ready. A revelation was sent down forbidding eating that meat and even though they were very hungry, they threw away the meat and looked for other food to eat.
Allah says,
"If you do love Allah, then Follow me: Allah will love you and forgive you your sins, for Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful."
And so when we celebrate the birth of the Prophet المولد النبوي. We have to follow his Sunnah and his straight path, and fully understand and practice his teachings.
We must do what the Prophet used to love doing, so we can be granted his assistance on the day of Judgment, and hope to be his companions in Paradise.
The way of Prophet Mohammad is pure and blessed. When Prophet Mohammad instructs us to do anything then we must fully obey and believe that it is for our benefit
Abdullah Ibn Omar said to his son: I heard Prophet Mohammad say,
“If your wife asks your permission to go to the Masjid, then you must allow her to go”
His son said, “By Allah I would not give her permission to go”
At this point, the narrator of this Hadeeth said, Abdullah Ibn Omar started to insult his son so severely, to a degree I had never seen him reach before, and while doing that Abdullah Ibn Omar would say, :“I tell you The Messenger of Allah said, and you dare to reject what he ordered!”
As we are instructed by Prophet Mohammad, all of us Muslims love to visit and pray and learn in our blessed mosques and Houses of Allah. We encourage holding educational classes and events. This Islamic Center has great educational offerings throughout the entire week for all ages, such as the family classes every Friday night. So bring your Families to your Center. Coming to the Masjid is better than staying home and following your own desires,
Prophet Mohammad said,
“None of you will be a true believer, until his desires fully follow my teachings and message of Islam.”
So fear Allah and come to your Masjid to fill it with life because it will witness for your actions on the Last Day.
Dear brothers and sisters,
The companions of the Mohammad loved him sincerely. The signs of this love in their hearts were obvious and sincere, may Allah be pleased with them.
And from this, Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said, A man from the companions of the Prophet, came once to the Prophet saying:
Oh Messenger of Allah, by Allah. You are the most beloved person to me, and every time I remember you in my house, I always want to see you. But what if I die, or you die, and your place is the highest Paradise. How then will I be able to see you?
Aisha said, “This is what worried me, so I remained silent until Allah revealed to his Prophet,
And whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger, (Mohammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) then they will be in the company of those on whom Allah has bestowed His Grace, of the Prophets, the Siddiqun (the first and most believing), the martyrs, and the righteous. And how excellent these companions are!
Rabaia Al-Aslmy (who used to serve the Prophet) once went to the Prophet to ask him a question.
O messenger of Allah, I wish to be your companion in Jannah (Paradise).
The Prophet asked: Is there anything else?
Rabia said: This is all I want, your companionship in Jannah.
The Prophet then said: Then help me to reach that, by increasing your Sujood, and prostration
After the battle of Hunain, the Prophet distributed the cattle and spoils of war. He gave his new Muslims but did not give the Ansaar anything.
When the Prophet came where the Ansaar were gathered. He saw their displeased faces, and his smile brightened with gratitude and appreciation.
Then he said,
“Oh people of Ansaar, Didn’t I find you ignorant, and guided you to the way of Allah? Didn’t I find you poor, and Allah enriched you of his bounty? And didn’t I find you enemies, and Allah enjoin your hearts together?
They answered: “Yes. Allah and his Prophet are far more generous and better”
The Prophet then said, Don’t you have anything to say?
They answered, “There is nothing to be said, but that Allah and his Prophet have the grace and bounty”
The Prophet then said, By Allah, You could have justly said:
We believed in you at a time when all called you a liar, We supported you at a time when you were frustrated, We gave you our money at a time when you were poor , And we sheltered you at a time when you were homeless.
O Ansaar,
Are you upset for a thing I gave to some people, to enjoin their hearts to Islam and left you out of it believing that your Islam already sufficed you?
Is it not enough for you, that the rest of the people will go home, with a sheep and a camel, whereas you will be returned to your homes, accompanied by the Prophet’s love and appreciation?
By Allah, if I were not one of the Muhaajiruun, I would rather be one of the Ansaar.
By the time the Prophet finished his words, the beards of al-Ansaar were wet with tears, for his words filled their souls and hearts with tranquility.
All of them said, “ It is enough for us, to have the Prophet’s love as our reward.”
Out of the companions’ love for the Prophet, whenever his name was mentioned, tears flooded their eyes because of how much they loved and missed him.
Abu Bakr gave a sermon a year after the death of the Prophet, he said to the people,
O people, In this same place a year ago I heard the Messenger of Allah say…
And he started weeping and crying. He repeated it three times, weeping every time and stopping. Then he finished by saying:
Allah never gave the son of Adam anything after sincerity, better than being a healthy well-being.
And when Abu Bakr was dying he said to his sons,
O my sons, when I die, rush my funeral. For the day when I will be next to Mohammad, is the best and most beloved day to me.”
When Omar Ibn Alkhataab was nearing death, he called his son Abdullah and said,
“Oh Abdullah, the only thing that matters to me, is to be beside the Prophet and his companion. Go to Aisha the Mother of the believers and say:
Omar is sending you his Salaam, and asks your permission, to be buried with his two companions (the Prophet and Abu Bakr)
Abdullah found Aisha weeping for Omar.
He said, Omar Ibn Alkhataab sends you his Salaam, and asks you permission to be buried with his two companions
She said: Tell him that I would never give it to anyone but him.
When he returned, Omar asked him about her answer. Abdullah said, “It is as you wish. She granted you permission.”
Omar said, “This might be while I am alive. But when I die and you pray on me, take my funeral to her and ask her again”
Then when Omar died, they went to her and asked again.
She said, “I had wanted to be buried, between my husband and my father, but I had preferred Omar to be buried there when he was alive and I will not betray my promise after his death.
This is the sincere love for the Messenger of Allah, and his companions wanting to be with him in life and death.
After the battle of Uhud where the lives lost were greatest, Muslim women of Madina rushed to meet the returning army, and each would only ask about Prophet Mohammad as they would be told about their martyred family members they would say,
“As long as the Messenger is safe, then all else is fine.”
Um Omarah and her son and husband saved the Messenger by planting their bodies before the swords attacking him.
The Messenger would look at them proudly and smile and say, “Oh Allah, please let them be with me in Paradise.”
Um Omaraha says,
“When I heard that I began fighting as strongly as men, and I never feared death, because I would be in Paradise with the Prophet.”
Um Heraam entered a room where the Prophet was sleeping and sweat from his head was falling on his pillow.
Um Heraam would then squeeze the corner of the pillow to drain the sweat into a jar.
When The Prophet woke up, he asked her about it.
She said, “O Messenger of Allah, we mix it with water and perfume and use it as medicine.”
The Prophet then asked Allah for her to honored as martyr. Many years later she was with the first wave of Muslims who brought Islam to the Island of Cyprus and became a martyr. And to this day people visit her grave where it is named: Grave of the Noble Woman
How does one speak of the love for Prophet Mohammad and those who love the Prophet and follow him
And how do we begin to comprehend the great reward that Allah has promised Muslims who love the Prophet.
Let us remember that Abu Taaleb, the uncle of the Prophet had died as a nonbeliever, and therefore should have been at the bottom of the Hellfire. But because of his love and support for Prophet Mohammad, the prophet said he would be the man with the lightest punishment of all those in the Hellfire.
Let us consider the example of Abu Lahab and his wife, both of whom Allah had promised, the worst punishment in the Hellfire, with a special fire that was created only to punish him. Abu Lahab would receive relief from punishment, in his grave every Monday, and would be able to sip a light drink from his fingertip, because he was happy when the Prophet was born and had freed a slave at the Prophet’s birth.
We are more worthy of honoring Prophet Mohammad and celebrating his birth and the Islam he taught us. As for all those who ignore loving him and his teachings, they must be very afraid of severe punishments and trials. So let us be of those who follow and love Prophet Mohammad as we continue to talk about him next time In Sha’ Allah.
